Abstract: Minimal surfaces in 
can be described by conformal harmonic maps
from the complex plane into 
. This was well known to Weierstrass who gave
a famous representation formula for these surfaces.
When studying harmonic morphisms from a Riemannian manifold 
into the
complex plane we are in the dual situation since they are harmonic maps
which are horizontally conformal. In the special when M is the Euclidean
, Baird and Wood obtained a representation formula for such maps, which is
dual to Weierstrass's classical formula.
In this talk I will give an introduction to minimal surfaces, harmonic maps,
harmonic morphisms, discuss the above mentioned duality, and describe how
harmonic morphisms can be constructed from more complicated manifolds
such as spheres, projective and hyperbolic spaces.
