Abstract: Under some natural additional conditions for
the Heisenberg commutation relation the uniqueness theorem
of J. von Neumann is valid. This is not the case after a
deformation of this relation obtained by introducing
a deformation parameter q into the commutator. The corresponding
algebra has infinitely many unitarily inequivalent irreducible
representations. Their connection with q-special functions is
pointed out.
