Contact, Friction and Mathematical Programming

Abstract:

A natural mathematical formulation of the physical phenomena of surface contact and friction is obtained through use of complementarity conditions. Therefore, Mathematical Programming (MP) plays an important role in the development of a qualitative theory for elastic (and inelastic) bodies in mechanical contact. This lecture will present three recent theoretical developments related to a linear elastic finite dimensional mechanical structure in unilateral frictional contact with a rigid support. (i) The situation of steady sliding is formulated as a nonstandard linear complementarity problem. An existence result is established which shows that a solution exists if and only if the external forces satisfy some compatibility conditions. (ii) New sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution to the semicoercive frictional contact problem are presented and interpreted. (ii) It is indicated how a nonsmooth Newton method or an interior point method could be used to obtain numerical solutions. Lokal: MAI:s seminarierum Välkomna!
