Seminarium i tillämpad matematik
Prof. Malcolm MacCallum, Maths. Dept., University of London, and Secretary of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation, is a well-known researcher, author and speaker over a wide range of fields: algebraic computing, mathematical cosmology, mathematical structure of Einstein's equations. On Wednesday 28 January at 11.15 he will speak on:
An Introduction to twistors.
Abstract.
Initally twistors were defined in (complexified) flat
space; mathematically, they are the fundamental representation of the
conformal symmetry group. Free massless fields turn out to
correspond to arbitrary holomorphic functions in twistor space, via an
integral representation, and the generalization of this has given new
results in representation theory. Several generalizations
of twistors to curved space were developed. The cohomological nature of these
results has provided an avenue of development, and so have the natural
fibre bundle structures introduced which have been linked to
properties of integrable systems in dynamics, an outcome which one
could argue was influential in pure mathematicians' focus on moduli
spaces and related concepts, including remarkable theorems by
Donaldson. There would not be time in one talk to describe all these
lines of development: the aim is the more modest one of providing a
starting point for further study.

Partial Differential Equations
Starting from Monday, the 26th of January I continue my course with the above title intended for postgraduate students. It is devoted to a systematic exposition of the theory of linear elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic partial differential equations, mostly of the second order. Both classical and functional analytic methods are used. No previous knowledge of the subject except for the undergraduate course in PDE and elements of functional analysis is assumed.
I shall not follow any particular book, but for some parts of the course one can consult the following monographs:
1. D. Gilbarg and N.S. Trudinger, Elliptic Partial Differential Equations of Second Order, Springer-Verlag, 1983.
2. O.A. Ladyzhenskaya, Boundary Value Problems of Mathematical Physics, Springer-Verlag, 1985.
3. E. De Benedetto, Partial Differential Equations, Birkhäuser, 1995.
Tid: Måndagar kl 15.15-17
