Matematiska kollokviet

Onsdagen den 23 januari, kl. 13.15 - 14.15 talar Professor Anders Björner, KTH,

Scarf complexes

Sammanfattning: I will give an introduction to a class of simplicial complexes first considered by the economist H. Scarf (Yale). Originally they arose for purposes having to do with integer programming, but recent research has shown their use for some questions in commutative algebra.

Lokal: MAI:s seminarierum Beurling

Seminarium i numerisk analys

On Monday 21 January at 13.15, Lina Hemmingsson from the Department of Scientific Computing, Uppsala University, will give a talk on

Deferred correction methods for PDEs

The seminar will take place in seminar room
Beurling.

Seminarium i matematisk statistik

Onsdagen den 23 januari, kl. 15.15 - 17.00 talar Prof. John P. Nolan Department of mathematics and statistics, American University Washington D.C.

Stable Distributions: Models for Heavy Tailed Data

Abstract: Stable random variables are the random variables that retain their shape when added together. These distributions generalize the Gaussian distribution and allow skewness and heavy tails - features found in many large data sets.

Part I will be an introduction to stable distributions. Emphasis will be on properties of stable laws, computational issues and statistical applications. Data sets in finance and engineering will be fit with stable models and assessed. These distributions are now computationally accessible and should be added to the toolbox of working scientists.

Part II will survey multivariate stable laws. This is a large class of multivariate heavy tailed distributions with possibly complicated dependence structure. Basic properties will be discussed, including the form of their densities. Some statistical applications will be discussed, as well as some recent results on closeness of stable laws.

Doktorandkurs i algebraisk topologi 5p

During the spring we will give a five-points graduate course in Algebraic Topology. In our course we will consider the following moments: Simplicial Complexes, Homology Groups of a Simplicial Complex, Relative Homology, Topological Invariance of the Homology Groups, Applications of Homology Theory to Classical Problems of Geometry and Topology such as the Brouwer fixed-point theorem, the Exact Homology Sequence, Mayer-Vietoris Sequences, Elements of Singular Homology Theory.

Although a course in Algebraic Topology is based on some elements from General Topology and Algebra we will try to include most necessary information in our course. It is a great advantage to have read at least a basic course in Abstract Algebra, e.g. TATA10 or similar.

Teaching: 9 lectures and 6 classes with excercises.

Literature: James R. Munkres, Elements of Algebraic Topology.

Time: The first lecture will be in the week 21-25 January. Exact date and time will be announced later.

Those interested in attending please send us an email: vitja@mai.liu.se

Welcome!

Announcement of course Algebraic Combinatorics 5p

During the spring I will give a graduate course in Algebraic Combinatorics. The main focus of the course will be Coxeter Groups and finite reflection groups. Examples of Coxeter Groups are the symmetric group of all permutations, the group of signed permutations and all the crystallographic groups. We will discuss the beatuiful connections between the combinatorial, algebraic and geometric faces of the theory. I will explain all necessary geometric notions such as polytopes, root systems and hyperplane arrangements. Coxeter Groups are important both in Lie Theory and has the last decade turned out to be at the hart of large parts of algebraic combinatorics.

Time: First lecture will take place 15.15-17.00 on Thursday 24/1

Place: Room Beurling

Examination: Hand-in problems.

Class litterature: Humphreys, James, "Reflection groups and Coxeter Groups", Cambridge University Press.

A more advanced but very readable book for those further interested in the topic is: Bourbaki, N. ``Groupes et algebres de Lie'', Ch. 4 - 6.

Welcome!

Svante Linusson
