A Numerical Approach to Solving Evolution Equations for Isolated Systems in General Relativity

Sammanfatning: We present a numerical scheme to evolve isolated systems in General Relativity. Isolated systems serve as models for real systems of physical interest like neutron stars or merging black holes. This particular class of systems is described by asymptotically flat spacetimes which possess the property of admitting a conformal extension. We work directly on the extended conformal manifold and solve numerically the conformal field equations, which assure that Einstein equations hold in the original spacetime. Because of the compactness of the conformal spacetime the whole manifold can be computed on a finite numerical grid. The final goal of this work is to apply these techniques to a self-gravitating, isolated system consisting of a distorted black hole and analyse the outgoing gravitational radiation comparing the results with the quasi normal mode behaviour observed in linear perturbation theory.

Seminars on Model-Based Phylogenetic Inference

Sammanfattning:
Under vårtermin 2004 kommer det att ges en serie föreläsningar/seminarier i modelbaserad fylogenetisk inferens. Därmed avses ett urval av de matematiska och sannolikhetsteoretiska metoderna för att estimera träd ur biologiska sekvensdata.
Föreläsarna kommer från avdelningarna i tillämpad matematik (diskret matematik) och matematisk statistik.
Den första föreläsningen är introduktion till frågeställningen, och omfattar hypotesen om den s.k. molekylära klockan, och elementen av Markovkedjor med ändligt antal tillstånd i kontinuerlig tid.

Graduate course in Spectral Theory

I will give a course on Spectral Theory, mainly for Hilbert space operators, during the spring 2004.
I will use the book W. ARVESON, A Short Course on Spectral Theory, Springer, New York, 2002.
The course will be given Tuesdays 13-15, starting on 27 January 2004 in Glashuset.
The course will be given in English if anyone so requires (please, contact me in advance).
