Wednesday 9 May 2007, Gavril Farkas, University of Texas at Austin speaks.

Title: The global geometry of the moduli space of curves.

Abstract: The moduli space of curves $M_g$ is the universal parameter space for Riemann surfaces of given genus. Its study has been initiated by Riemann in 1857 and it has been a long-standing problem to describe the nature of the moduli space as an algebraic variety. I will survey the history of the problem starting with Severi's conjecture from 1915 predicting that $M_g$ is always unirational (that is close to a projective space and admitting an explicit parametrization) and continuing with the work of Harris and Mumford from 1982, spectacularly disproving Severi's conjecture. I will finish by discussing a very recent result which settles this problem in one of the most interesting remaining cases, that of genus 22.

Seminarium i matematisk statistik

Fredagen den 27 april 2007, 15.15-16.00 talar Anders Nordgaard, statistik, LiU.

Title: Bootstrap for stationary sequences.

Abstract: In this talk I will give a review on bootstrap methods for stationary sequences. Most of the methods were developed between 1985 and 1995 and some of them have only gone through minor refinements since then. However, there have been some interesting papers trying to summarize the concept and clear out the differences between the methods. The most popular ones are still the Moving block bootstrap, originating in the work by Kunsch (1989) and the Auto-regressive bootstrap, which was generally discussed by Kreiss \& Franke (1992). Frequency-domain based methods are less used, but there are also some more recent developments in that area. In the talk I will also revisit my own results (from 1996) on the frequency-domain bootstrap.

Lokal: Kompakta rummet.
